Gun Control Biden Begins Meetings

fimgVice President Joe Biden began meetings with a variety of gun control, gun advocacy, entertainment, gaming and other groups as part of his effort to come up with a plan for the Obama administration prior to the end of January.

Biden`s meetings are part of a series that is attempting to seek some form of consensus around efforts to deal with incidents like the Dec. 14th shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. Twenty first graders were among those shot that day.

Biden (and President Obama) are torn between creating proposals that will satisfy their base, but are unlikely to pass Congress and less sweeping efforts that might pass Congress but would leave the Democratic base as unsatisfied with the President`s efforts now as they were with the minimal changes that took place during his first term.

Even more difficult are efforts to come up with any action that would actually create a positive outcome.

Biden said the administration is `determined to take action.` One option would be to bypass Congress and the legislative process and as Biden said, `There are executive orders, executive action that can be taken.` Having said that, Biden acknowledged that it is not clear what kind of executive order is possible. Some gun control advocates have suggested measures that analysts think would be overturned in court.

Executive Orders Possible

  • New Communications System Ready to Launch -

Floyd County`s $26.7 million communications system is close to be operational by public safety agencies. As testing concludes the county expects the transfer date to be Tuesday, January 22. The system has been used since last month by non-public safety officials without any issues. The new system will allow for coverage of close to 98% of the county compared to just around 70% with the former system.

Floyd County approved the 10 tower communications system with a SPLOST vote in 2009. Before the county had one tower to cover the entire county, which was placed on Mount Alto.

Floyd County EMA director Scotty Hancock said that the new system was needed because of numerous dead spots in the county which left emergency personal without the ability to contact others in emergency situations.

The new signal, a trunking, allows for better communication channels with emergency personal. It is also on a different band thank uhf and vhf signals meaning most scanners that the community has used will not pick up the radio frequency. Agencies are still looking into how to cover the almost $1 million annual maintenance cost.…

  • Mays Bridge Rd at Burnett Ferry to be Closed Thurs -

The Georgia Department of Transportation is advising motorists in Floyd County of a detour off Mays Bridge Road at its intersection with Burnett Ferry Road, scheduled for Thursday, January 10, 2013, to accommodate work on realigning Mays Bridge Road with the West Rome Bypass currently under construction in Floyd County. Mays Bridge Road at its current intersection with Burnett Ferry Road will be closed and through traffic will be detoured west to the intersection with Horseleg Creek Road. Traffic from Horseleg Creek Road to Mays Bridge Road will continue north through the intersection with Burnett Ferry Road and back to existing Mays Bridge Road, while traffic from Ausburn Road will turn left onto newly constructed road to access Mays Bridge Road.
Signs will be placed along the detour route to help motorists navigate around the closed road. This construction operation and the local road closure it necessitates are weather permitting and subject to change.

`We understand that the closure of Mays Bridge Road at that location may cause some inconvenience for area residents, but it is necessary for relocating this road as quickly as possible, constructing this portion of West Rome Bypass and giving it back to the traveling public,” explained DeWayne Comer, district engineer at the Georgia DOT office in Cartersville.

The relocation of Mays Bridge Road is part of a 5.478 mile project to widen and reconstruct the West Rome Bypass on State Route (SR) 1/US 27, beginning south of the Coosa River and extending to north of SR 20 in Floyd County. This project also includes the construction of ten bridges located within its limits. Work on this project began early November 2011 and the entire project is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2015, at a construction cost of close to $43 million.…

  • Holiday Season – Brings Increase in Travelers in 2012 -

AAA projects 93.3 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holidays, an increase of 1.6 percent from the 91.8 million people who traveled last year. The year-end holiday travel period is defined as Saturday, Dec. 22, to Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.

Highlights from AAA`s 2012/13 Year-End Holiday Travel Forecast include:

    • Year-end holiday travelers to total 93.3 million, an increase of 1.6 percent from the 91.8 million who traveled last year
    • Ninety percent of travelers (84.4 million) are forecast to travel by automobile, representing 26.7 percent of the total U.S. population
    • Holiday air travel is expected to increase 4.5 percent to 5.6 million travelers from 5.4 million in 2011
    • Median spending is expected to increase almost 6 percent to $759, compared to $718 in 2011, with transportation costs consuming about 29 cents of every travel dollar
    • Average distance traveled to increase to 760 miles round-trip from 726 miles in 2011, an expected result with the increase in air travelers

`The year-end holiday season remains the least volatile of all travel holidays as Americans will not let economic conditions or high gas prices dictate if they go home for the holidays or kick off the New Year with a vacation,` said Brent Hubele, vice president, AAA Travel, The Auto Club Group. `Travel this year will end on a strong note and the advanced travel bookings for 2013 are far outpacing those from this time last year.`

AAA estimates the national average price of gasoline will slowly drop through the end of the year and average between $3.20-$3.40 a gallon by New Year’s Day. Gas prices dropped about 50 cents a gallon on average from September through early December, but remain at record highs for this time of year.

Approximately 90 percent of travelers (84.4 million) plan to travel by automobile this holiday season. This is a 1.3 percent increase from the 83.3 million people who traveled …

  • Benefit Costs Growing Rapidly -

In 2012, the Federal government spent around $2.2 trillion of its $3.7 trillion budget on benefit programs. By comparison, total tax revenues were $2.6 trillion and the Federal deficit was $1.1 trillion. The Federal debt increased by almost $1.4 trillion in that same period.

    During the last four years:

    • Medicaid has grown from 46.9 million to 56 million people.
    • Disability beneficiaries increased from 7.5 million to 8.8 million.
    • Food stamp recipients have grown from 32 million to 47

The 77 million baby boomers translate into an estimated 10,000 people moving out of the work force into retirement each day, further reducing the revenue stream to finance these benefit programs.…

  • Gingrey Proposes Congressional Pay Freeze -

Rep. Phil Gingrey of Georgia introduced legislation prohibiting members of Congress from receiving a pay increase during a year with a budget deficit.

HR 108 – Member Pay Freeze Act says before being rewarded with a pay raise, legislators must put our country’s fiscal house in order.

Gingrey is also sponsoring two other pieces of legislation.

HR 106 – Congressional Budget Accountability Act returns all funds remaining in Congressional office budgets at the end of a calendar year to the Treasury Department for the specific purpose of deficit reduction. This is a common-sense measure that would incentivize Congressional offices to better manage their budgets and pay down our nation’s debt.

HR 107 – Federal Employee Accountability Act eliminates use of `official time.` During the Carter administration, a law was enacted allowing federal employees to perform union activities—during the official work day—on the taxpayers’ dime. Use of official time is estimated to cost taxpayers $1.3 billion over 10 years. Repealing official time will save taxpayers money, provide greater government transparency and increase oversight of federal employees.…
